Smashball Organisation in the field

To increase the drive of the children that will play volleyball in the near future, it is important that all children can easily spike. You can easily enable this, to hang the net so that if the smallest player is standing by the net, he reaches the top of the net if he extends his arm. This will enable even the smallest player, to feel the thrill of Smashball.

Furthermore, just as in beach volleyball, different levels of Smashball can play against each other. Especially in the beginning, with a small number of players, mixing different ages and levels is inevitable.

Visitors of Cool Moves Volleyball (CMV) tournaments know that these tournaments are a crisscross of courts, teams and children. Because a net across the length of the hall is often used in CMV tournaments, it is impossible to hang a net higher or lower at certain courts.

In my opinion, you should therefore play Smashball in pairs and not in trio's. The lineation might be a bit more volleyball-like (which is a limited argument), but in trio's there is always one player by the net. For safety reasons (among other reasons) I believe Smashball in pairs would be better. Especially if net height is dependent on the length of the smallest player, some children might stick out over the net with their heads. Because of the rotation, individual players can't escape standing by the net. The front row player risks being spiked on the head. If you were allowed to block in Smashball, the safety argument would be less relevant.

I do understand that you can't always have the ideal situation of different net heights, especially considering the limited rental budget. In practice there will probably be two teams per court or a net across the length of the hall, with three or four small courts. Therefore the net will be hung at the same height for every team. If you play in pairs net height is less relevant.

Also, a movement towards the net after your team member passed is game like. However if there already is someone at the net and after playing offence, a movement by means of rotating isn't functional or relevant anymore. This will only be moving because you have to move. We should teach our children functional movement and thus play in pairs. In that way every movement is functional; from walking towards the net to set to moving backwards to defend the attack.

For completeness, I would like to add that the Nevobo prefers trios in the final Smashball levels.
